ECCA Alaska 2008 - Policy Regarding Payment by Symposium Participants At most ECCA symposia, the host university or organization has been able to provide lodging and food at no cost to participants. This was feasible in the early days of ECCA when the group was small. Now, over 15 years after the first gathering in at the University of Montreal in 1992, the number of people attending the symposia has grown. For ECCA, and criminology in general, this is good (the more scholars and practitioners who think preventing crime is not only about trying to improve offenders, the better), but it creates potential problems for symposium hosts. The symposium organizers have considered several options should our budget be overwhelmed by a large number of participants. These included covering accommodation and food for select persons (e.g., presenters or the first 60 registrants); restricting the number of participants to what our budget will allow; or charging a set or variable amount to each participant depending on various criteria, such as when he or she registered, or if he or she is a confirmed presenter. After much discussion, we decided to charge each ECCA participant an amount up to, but not exceeding, $150.00 USD. This amount may be less depending on the number of participants. ALL participants, regardless of whether they are staying in UAA Housing or elsewhere off campus, will be asked to contribute this amount. It will be collected by UAA Conference Services when you check in upon arrival at ECCA. For each participant, UAA will provide three nights of accommodation at Campus Housing (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday), and all meals from breakfast on Thursday to lunch on Saturday. On Wednesday night there will be a reception with “heavy” hors d’oeuvres which could substitute as supper. As has been the case with previous ECCA meetings, if you bring your spouse, child, or friend along with you, they are welcome to join us for meals and stay at UAA Campus Housing, but none of their food or accommodation expenses will be paid by UAA. Regards, ECCA Alaska 2008 Organizers
