Airport Information

Terminals

There are two terminals at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.  The South Terminal is where the majority of planes land.  The North Terminal is much smaller and less modern, but much more charming.  Airlines that fly out of the North Terminal include Continental, Delta, and US Airways, and these Asian carriers: Asiana, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Japan Airlines and Korean Air.  The largest carrier, Alaska Airlines, flies out of the South Terminal.

Ground Transportation

Public Transportation - Bus #7 goes to the airport about once an hour, starting after 6 AM and running until past 10 PM.  Because most flights arrive late at night or early in the morning, the bus is generally not an efficient way to get from the airport to UAA.  However, should you wish to try it, take the #7 inbound to 36th Avenue and transfer to the #36 outbound (going east towards the mountains).  This route runs straight down 36th Avenue to the UAA campus.  The bus is $1.75 one-way.  Once you get off the bus in front of Providence Hospital, you will have to walk a quarter-mile or so down a path to the UAA Commons on Sharon Gagnon Lane.  Two other buses, the #13 and the #45, go somewhat closer to the UAA Commons, but to catch those rather more indirect routes, you would have to take the #7 all the way downtown to the Bus Accommodation Center (BAC) and transfer there.  The People Mover website is quite good and will quickly allow you to plan your bus journey.

Taxis - It is usually very easy to get a taxi at the airport, although if you fly into the North Terminal, delays are common.  Sometimes it is faster to take the airport shuttle to the South Terminal and catch a taxi there!  The ride to UAA from the airport should take about 20 minutes and cost about $25.00, but of course, much depends on the traffic conditions when you arrive.  Here's more information on taxis, including telephone numbers to the main companies (these can be useful if you're at the North Terminal late at night with no taxi in sight).

Getting to UAA from the Airport

The main road out of the airport is International Airport Drive (known locally as "International").  There are several north-south cross streets, such as Spenard Road, Minnesota Drive, and the New Seward Highway.  From those roads, the two best choices to get to UAA are Tudor Road or 36th Avenue.  (Note that 36th Avenue is named Providence Drive in the portion that runs between the university and Providence Hospital).  If you take a taxi from the North Terminal, it's quite possible the driver will go north through the industrial part of the airport to get to Northern Lights Boulevard, which runs east-west and can also take you to the UAA campus.

The address of UAA Campus Housing is 3700 Sharon Gagnon Lane.  In the event that the driver doesn't know where it is, just say it is "off Bragaw between 36th/Providence and Tudor, across Bragaw from the Native Hospital."

This map shows a possible route from the airport to UAA, which goes along International to the New Seward to Tudor.  For orientation when you are in Anchorage, there is a large mountain range to the east known as the Chugach.  Unless it is dark (which will not be a problem in July), or you are behind a big building, the Chugach is visible and will keep you from getting lost.
